Taking part in sports
Dialogue
Gavin: So, did I tell you that I joined a football team?
Stephanie: No, you didn't. When did you do that?
Gavin: Just today. I'm so excited. I haven't been on a sports
team in a long time.
Stephanie: When is your firstpractice?
Gavin: This Thursday. Practices are every Thursday and then
every once in a while, we'll compete against another team on a
Sunday.
Stephanie: Sounds good. Does your team have a name?
Gavin: Yes, we're the Bowes Park Bowlers.
Stephanie: Nice name—very creative.
Gavin: Thanks, but it wasn't my idea. The team has been around
for years.
Stephanie: So when's the last time you played football?
Gavin: Oh, let me think… I suppose not since high school.
Stephanie: Are you still going to know how to play?
Gavin: It's like learning how to bike—you only have to learn
how to ride a bicycle once.
Stephanie: Well, I think it's great you're going to start
exercising more. I should do the same thing. I've been so sedentary
lately.
Gavin: You should. Have you ever been on a sports team?
Stephanie: Sure. I played basketball and softball when I was in
elementary school. And then in junior high school, I started
running on the cross-country running team.
Gavin: How about in high school?
Stephanie: I didn't have time for sports teams anymore—and I
never really enjoyed competing that much anyway.
Gavin: So you quit exercising?
Stephanie: No, I carried on running with friends after school.
Gavin: So when did you quit running?
Stephanie: After I ran a marathon. You know running can be
really hard on your knees. That certainly was the case for me. The
doctor actually told me to stop.
Gavin: That's too bad. Have you joined any sports teams since
then?
Stephanie: No, but I was thinking of joining a roller derby
team. I think it'd be a good way to get my aggression out—and it's
not far from here so it'd be easy to get to.
Gavin: That's a good idea. I bet it'd be a good way to meet
some interesting people too.
Stephanie: Is that why you're joining the football team?
Gavin: Partly, that and to get back into shape.
译文 Translation
