The story behind the Dragon Boat Festival dates back to the time of Emperor Wu of the Zhou dynasty (1046 BC - 256 BC). Legend has it that Emperor Wu was camping out in the mountains when he received a message that his beloved wife, Empress Dowager Chen, had fallen into a well. Determined to save his wife, Emperor Wu donned a suit of armor and scaled the well to retrieve her. Unfortunately, he got stuck in the process and had to be helped out by his soldiers. Upon his return to the palace, Emperor Wu succumbed to fever and died within a few days.
