Helping My Friends and Classmates
My name is Emily and I'm in first grade. First grade has been really fun so far! I've made lots of new friends and I really like my teacher, Mrs. Johnson. She is really nice and helps us learn lots of new things every day.
One of the best things about first grade is that we get to do lots of activities and projects together as a class. Mrs. Johnson always splits us up into small groups to work on things. I really like working in groups because then I get to spend time with my friends and we can all help each other out.
The first time we did a group project, I was a little nervous because I didn't know everyone in my group very well yet. But my group ended up being really fun to work with! There were four of us - me, Jacob, Maya, and Aiden. We had to make a poster all about the seasons and what kinds of weather happens in each season.
Jacob is really good at drawing, so he drew some really cool pictures on our poster of things like leaves changing colors in the fall, a snowy winter day, flowers blooming in spring, and a sunny summer scene. Maya is a great writer, so she wrote all the descriptions and facts about each season. Aiden and I worked together to gather the materials we needed like colored pencils, glue, scissors, and construction paper.
At first, Jacob got a little frustrated because he couldn't get the picture of the winter scene to look exactly how he wanted it to. But Maya helped cheer him up by telling him his drawing still looked amazing. I helped Maya think of some describing words to use in her writing too. And when Aiden and I were having trouble ripping the brown construction paper for the fall scene, Jacob stepped in to help tear it for us. We all took turns helping each other out whenever someone was struggling with their part.
By working together as a team and supporting each other, our seasons poster turned out looking so cool! Mrs. Johnson was really impressed and she hung it up on the classroom wall. I was proud of all the hard work my group did, and I was glad we could all help one another.
Another time, we had to put on a little play about recycling for the rest of our first grade class. Our teacher split us into groups again and gave each group a different recyclable material to focus on, like plastic, paper, glass, or metal. My group was supposed to do the part about recycling plastic.
Ali and Sophia were really outgoing, so they volunteered to have the speaking roles and act out a little skit. Tommy didn't want to have to speak in front of everyone, but he's really artistic, so he made an awesome backdrop out of construction paper showing a bunch of plastic bottles, containers, and bags. I'm
pretty shy too, so I worked with Tommy on the backdrop and props.
During our practices though, Ali and Sophia started arguing over which one of them got to have more lines in the skit. They were getting pretty upset with each other and it was distracting the rest of us from getting our work done. I felt bad seeing my friends fight, so I tried to step in and help them compromise.
I suggested that instead of just having one big role, they could split up the lines more evenly and take turns talking. That way it was fair and they both got to participate equally. Ali and Sophia agreed that was a good solution. Tommy and I gave them both words of encouragement too, telling them they were both doing a great job practicing.
When it was finally time to perform our skit about recycling plastic, Ali and Sophia nailed their lines and acting without anymore arguing. And the backdrop and props Tommy and I made looked fantastic up on the little stage. We all felt so proud watching our class laugh and cheer for our skit. It really showed that when you work together as a team and help your friends out, you can create something awesome!
There are lots of other times I can think of when my classmates and I helped each other this year. Like
when Miguel was having trouble tying his shoes and Jayden patiently helped walk him through it. Or when Isabella was feeling sad one morning and Leah cheered her up by complimenting her pretty hairclip. Anytime someone is struggling with something, there's always a friend willing to lend a hand.
