It's almost 2 am at Lightning in a Bottle a music festival in Bradley Calif The last song of the night is the "Clean Up Song" by MrNigel&Friends Abruptlytime in a bottle heads bow and backs bend as people pick up empty cups dirty forks and festival guides and drop them into cans
"It works" laughs Jesse Shannon marketing director of Do LaB the organization that hosts Lightning in a Bottle "It reminds people in an interesting and cute way not to leave everything on the dance floor" The "Clean Up Song" has been a tradition at Lightning in a Bottle since the beginning It's just one of the innovative ways music festivals are trying to l
essen their impact on the environment
Outdoor festivals have been called environmental disasters A 2006 analysis conducted by Burning Man the annual gathering in the northwestern Nevada desert showed that the event produced 91 million pounds of carbon emissions(排放), or 1400 pounds per person These events literally produce tons of waste anything from 60 tons at Lightning in a Bottle in 2015 to almost 550 tons at Bonnaroo in 2017
Burning Man has a strong "Leave No Trace" policy Lightning in a Bottle hosts talks from climate activists(积极分子). Outsides Lands Music and Arts Festival in San Francisco has worked with Clean Vibes to responsibly manage its waste In 2016 it diverted(使转向) 91 percent of all waste from landfill(垃圾填埋池) by encouraging recycling and reuse
Festivals hope they can affect people's attitudes and awareness instead of simply reducing their own environmental effects "People at a festival are exploring an alternative way of living and it's a great opportunity to reassess your relationship to waste" MrShannon says "People have been gathering for as long as there have been people" Shannon sa
ys "So it's not something we are going to stop doing It's more what we can do to reduce the impacts of these gatherings and at the same time have a positive effect We are confident we are helping people's mind change We still have a long way to go"

Fortune cookies commonly served after meals at Chinese restaurants in the US., are characterized by a fortune which is written on a small piece of paper tucked inside the cookie There are several competing stories about the origin of the fortune cookie None of them however has been proven to be entirely true
One of these stories traces(追溯) the cookie's origin back to 13th- and 14th-century China which was then occupied by the Mongols According to the legend(传说), notes of secrets plans for a revolution to overthrow the Mongols(蒙古人) were hidden in mooncakes that would ordinarily have been filled with sweet bean paste The revolution turned out to be successful and eventually led to the formation of the Ming Dynasty This story may sound highly credible but there seems to be no solid evidence that it inspired the creation of the treats we know of today as fortune cookies
Another account claims that David Jung a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles created the fortune cookie in 1918 Concerned about the poor people he saw wandering near his shop he made cookies and passed them out free on the streets Each cookie contained a strip of paper inside with an inspirational quotation on it
However the more generally accepted story is that the fortune cookie first turned up in either 1907 or 1914 in San Francisco created by a Japanese immigrant Makoto Hagiwara The fortune cookie was based on a Japanese snack but Hagiwara sweetened the recipe to appeal to American tastes He put thank-you notes in the cookies and served them to his guests with tea Within a few years Chinese restaurant owners in San Francisco had copied the recipe and replaced the thank-you notes with fortune notes Such fortune cookies became common in Chinese restaurants in the US after World War II
