As Dai-yu entered the room she saw a silver-haired old lady advancing to meet her, supported on either side by a servant. She knew that this must be her 红楼之我是贾赦的奶奶Grandmother Jia and would have fallen on her knees and made her kotow, but before she could do so her grandmother had caught her in her arms and pressing her to her bosom with cries of “My pet!” and “My poor lamb!” burst into loud sobs, while all those present wept in sympathy, and Dai-yu felt herself crying as though she could never stop. It was some time before those present succeeded in calming them both down and Dai-yu was at last able to make her kotow.
评析
In Chinese, there is difference between in the name of your family members between father’s side and mother’s side, however, there is no difference in English. For example, both father’s mother and mother’s mother are called “grandmother” in English.
David Hawkes adopted Domestication translation successfully here, and Grandmother Jia called Dai-yu as “pet” and “poor lamb” in his translation. The word “lamb” are always used to describe those who are meek and gentle as lambs,or the people who are gullible. Besides, the “lamb” is the symbol of Jesus who sacrificed himself for redemption. There are some similar expressions like “as meek/gentle/mild as a lamb”.It is very brilliant for Hawkes to use this character which is quite familiar to British and American people to translate.Readers can feel that the grandmother’s favor to Dai-yu. At the same time, Dai-yu’s misfortune was conveyed naturally by the characters of “pet” and “lamb”.
