My Best Friend Sarah: Then and Now
Sarah has been my best friend for as long as I can remember. We met in kindergarten and instantly hit it off. From playing make-believe games during recess to staying up late whispering at our first sleepover, Sarah and I were inseparable from the very start. Even though more than six years have passed since that first day we became friends, she's still one of the most important people in my life. However, a lot has changed with Sarah over the years.
When I first met Sarah back in kindergarten, she was a shy, quiet girl who rarely raised her hand in class. She had long, dark hair that was always neatly braided, and she wore plain dresses or skirts to school every day. Sarah spoke so softly that I could barely hear her voice at times. She was also a bit clumsy, constantly tripping over her own feet or dropping things. But despite her shyness and clumsiness, I was drawn to Sarah's gentle, caring nature and kind smile that would light up her whole face.
One of my earliest memories of Sarah was when a boy in our class accidentally knocked her books out of her hands during reading time. While the rest of us giggled, Sarah just bent down without saying a word and calmly started gathering her scattered books and papers. I remember being struck by how mature and unbothered she seemed in that moment. From then on, I knew there was something special about the sweet, well-mannered girl named Sarah.
As we grew older and entered elementary school together, Sarah began ever-so-slowly coming out of her shy shell. By third grade, she was raising her hand more frequently in class to answer questions or read out loud. She still spoke softly, but her voice had a newfound confidence behind it. Sarah had also become a little more coordinated and didn't trip over her own feet quite as often, though her clumsiness would occasionally make an appearance.
While her personality was evolving, Sarah's physical appearance stayed relatively the same throughout elementary school. She kept her long, dark hair pulled back in braids and
wore modest dresses or skirts every day, just like she had in kindergarten. In my mind, Sarah was beginning to blossom into her own person, but she still looked like the same sweet, innocent girl I had befriended years earlier.
Then, almost overnight it seemed, everything about Sarah changed when we entered sixth grade. It was as if a switch had been flipped over the summer before middle school. The shy, quiet girl I once knew was suddenly confident and outgoing. Sarah had traded in her modest dresses for stylish jeans and tops. Instead of wearing her hair in braids, it was now cut into a chic, shoulder-length style. Even her posture and way of carrying herself was different – more assured and self-possessed.
I barely recognized my best friend when I first saw her that year. Sure, her warm smile and kind eyes were the same, but Sarah looked and acted like a completely different person. She was cracking jokes in class, raising her hand to answer every question, and holding court with a new group of cool, older friends during lunch. My once shy, soft-spoken best friend was now a social butterfly!
At first, Sarah's dramatic transformation was almost too much for me. I felt left behind as she gained new friends and confidence while I was What if Sarah no longer wanted to be my friend now that she was all grown up and self-assured? What if she found me boring or babyish compared to her new, super cool middle school self? I started to drift away from Sarah, figuring it was only a matter of time before the new her ditched the old me.
Luckily, my fears couldn't have been more misplaced. Despite all of her changes, both inside and out, Sarah was still Sarah at her core – loyal, caring and an amazing friend. One day after class, she pulled me aside and explained how she understood that her transformation probably seemed strange and abrupt to me. Sarah said she had gained a lot of self-confidence over the summer at camp, but she would never let that change who she was or what our friendship meant to her. From that day on, Sarah made an effort to keep me looped into her new social life and constantly reminded me that while she had grown up, I would always be her very best friend.
Looking back now, Sarah's evolution from that shy kindergarten girl into a confident, stylish middle schooler is one of the most remarkable personal transformations I've ever witnessed. Her chances, both inside and out, were so profound that she was almost unrecognizable at times. However, her core values of kindness, loyalty and our treasured friendship never changed one bit.
